Spring Awakening is a great musical, which has won Tony Award. This rock musical has been organized by Duncan Sheik and book and lyrics by Steven Sater. The musical is its basis ion the one of the most controversial German play with the same title by Frank Wedekind, in the year 1891 if. They play has been set in the last decade of nineteenth century Germany. The play is about the awareness of a teenager about the outer and inside realities, being attached with the rise of libido or sexuality in other words. It is interesting to know that the original play was banned in Germany due to its quite clear show of different sexual acts like masturbation, abortion, rape and suicide. However the musical has quite a different flavor as the characters sometimes express their motivations and desires directly to the audience.
The musical play was not inaugurated in a single day, there had been numerous workshops, concerts and rewrites over period of seven years. Spring Awakening was premiered by the Off-Broadway company at the Atlantic Theatre Company on May 19, 2006, for a period of almost three months. The show was later presented by Broadway at the Eugene O'Neill Theatre on December 10, 2006. Spring Awakening has got a great critical acclaim, and had received eleven 2007 Tony Award nominations, winning eight, which also includes two awards for best musical, direction, book, score and featured actor. The show has also the honor of winning four Drama Desk Awards, which includes the Outstanding Musical, as well. The production is directed by Michael Mayer and choreographed by Bill T. Jones. Later in the same year, Decca Broadway had released the original cast recording, which has won the Grammy Award for Best Musical Show Album in the year of 2008. The guitar Sheik, which was used for the composition of the songs for the musical, is on display at the New York Library for the Performing Arts.
The story of the plays is unfolded in a way as a leading character named Wendla Bergmann, who is an adolescent girl in late-19th century Germany, is frustrated on the matter of getting no ex education from her mother. She is in dialogue with her mother that she has grown up to an age, where she needs to know about the reality of the birth of babies, considering that she is about to be an aunt for the second time. Her mother is covering the truth by saying that women conceive their children, by loving their husbands to the fullest. She is concerned that the other young girls of the town, also appear to be innocent and without knowledge.
Even the situation at the school is equally disappointing, as some teenage boys are studying Virgil in Latin class. When Moritz Stiefel, a very nervous and intense young man, unconsciously reads a line in other tone, the teacher treats him in a very harsh manner. Moritz's classmate, the rebellious and intelligent Melchior Gabor, tries to defend him, but the teacher does not listen to the cries. It proves to be a time, when Melchior thinks about the shallow narrow-mindedness of school and society and expresses his interest to know, what is forbidden for them. Moritz has a problem with a certain nature of dreams, which Melchior realizes that Moritz are of erotic nature. As Melchior, who has learned sexual information from books, explains Moritz that all the boys their age get the dreams. All the boys tell about their own frustrating thoughts and desires. Moritz, finds it really hard to have a direct conversation on such matter with Melchior, and asks him to write an essay, full of information with illustrations.
The story of a Teenager, who is experiencing both inner and outer uproar of the sexuality, is told by the musical. The music of the musical is given by Duncan Sheik while the lyrics are written by Steven Sater as well as the book. Spring Awakening is a Rock musical that makes use of the blend of alternative rock infused with folk genre. The musical on Broadway Production is directed by Michael Mayer while the choreographer of the musical is Bill T. Jones. On the Broadway productions the role of Wendla is portrayed by Lea Michele, while Jonathan Groff plays Melchior and Mortitz is played by John Gallagher Jr. Some other cast members include Lauren Pritchard Skylar Astin and Remy Zaken. The replacements, later, were made when the role of Wendla was played by Alexandra Socha, Kyle Raibko and Hunter Parrish played Melchior and replacements for the role of Moritz included Blake Bashoff and Gerard Canonico. Other replacements included Blake Daniel, Matt Doyle, Kate Burton, Glenn Flescher and Emma Hunton.
Several differences can be seen during the comparison of Broadway musical and the original play that was written by Wedekind. Some significant changes that the musical holds as compared to the play are the length which is shorter and the order of the things that happen with in the musical and the play. Another change is the change of character, as in the musical a character named Robert is induced, while in the play that character is Anna. The way things happens in play and musical are different to some extent as well, as in the play Wendla is raped by Melchior while in the musical she says no at the first time then later shows her consent and seemingly enjoys having sex.
